Bing SEO is worth funding when it introduces suitable buyers to commercially important pages and there is a specific visibility problem worth fixing. It is not worth funding because somebody found a market-share chart, copied a Google checklist and added another coloured line to the monthly report.
That distinction matters. A specialist company may need only a few valuable enquiries for Bing to justify attention. An ecommerce business can receive thousands of impressions and still have no meaningful opportunity if the searches concern the wrong products, places or buying situations.
TL;DR
- Market share is context, not permission. Neither "too small to matter" nor "untapped goldmine" has looked at your customers.
- Prove the evidence window before judging the channel: a new Bing Webmaster Tools property is a starting point, not a verdict.
- Build the case on five joined records: demand, fit, fault, fix and displacement.
- End every review in one of four budget states, with the rejected alternative visible.
Bing does not have to be large. It has to be useful.
Useful means more than traffic. The channel must show evidence of relevant demand, a credible route to conversion and a gap the business can realistically improve. Until those pieces join up, “do more Bing SEO” is not a growth strategy. It is an uncosted hunch.
Market share is context, not permission
Market-share data describes aggregated behaviour across devices, countries, industries and intentions. It cannot tell you whether the next buyer for one particular business will search on Bing. This is where two lazy arguments collide. One side says Bing is smaller than Google, therefore it can be ignored. The other says less competition makes Bing an easy source of customer acquisition. Neither claim is strong enough to spend a company’s money.
A smaller channel can matter when one qualified enquiry has high commercial value, a relevant audience is demonstrably present or maintaining visibility is inexpensive. The same channel can remain immaterial even after the technical setup is immaculate. I would not approve a Bing campaign until the team can answer these questions:
- Which commercially important pages receive Bing impressions and clicks?
- Which services, products, problems or locations do those visits concern?
- What useful action can the visitor take next?
- Which enquiries meet the company’s actual fit criteria?
- Is there a visible problem that better content, website design or technical work could repair?
- What other growth marketing work would the Bing activity displace?
The final question is routinely omitted. It is also the one that turns a tidy SEO recommendation into a business decision.
Prove the evidence window before judging the channel
An empty report does not prove there is no opportunity. It may mean the property was added recently, the wrong site is selected, the reporting period is unrepresentative or conversion tracking misses the telephone calls that matter. Bing’s documentation says Search Performance data can take time to appear after a site is added and does not provide historical data from before collection began (Bing Search Performance). A newly verified dashboard is therefore a starting point, not a verdict on demand. Before deciding whether Bing deserves investment, confirm:
I treat “no visible Bing demand” as an unresolved claim until those conditions have been checked. Unknown is less satisfying than no. It is also more honest, and much cheaper than building a strategy around missing evidence.
Use a commercial evidence chain, not a visibility score
The investment case needs five connected records. None deserves to be hidden inside a proprietary score because a director should be able to challenge every step.
| Evidence | What to record | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| Observed demand | Relevant pages, queries, impressions and clicks | That the visitor was commercially suitable |
| Buyer quality | Need, location, customer type, value and outcome | That more visibility can be won |
| Current coverage | Crawl, index and result evidence for priority pages | That worthwhile demand exists |
| Repairable gap | A specific page, technical or result-promise weakness | That the repair will create revenue |
| Cost and displacement | Implementation, maintenance and the forgone alternative | That the cheapest task is the best task |
High impressions without appropriate buyers are vanity. Excellent buyer quality based on one untraceable conversation is fragile. A large technical backlog without evidence of demand may justify maintenance, but it does not automatically justify a digital growth programme. The case becomes credible when the records join: suitable demand exists, an important page has a bounded weakness, the business can act on that weakness, and the expected learning or commercial upside justifies what the work will replace. That is the mechanism I use: demand, fit, fault, fix and displacement. Miss any one of them and the recommendation changes.
Read Bing’s evidence before borrowing Google’s conclusion
Bing Webmaster Tools reports what Bing observed. Its Search Performance documentation describes page- and keyword-level impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position, alongside crawl and index information. It also explains that overall reporting may include sources beyond conventional web results (Bing Search Performance). Keep the source and date filters visible. A rise in a combined chart is not automatically an improvement in conventional organic rankings. Nor does a fall prove that a page has become worse.
Start with pages close to a commercial decision: core service and product pages, meaningful location pages, comparisons, pricing and eligibility explanations, proof used during a sale, and contact, booking or checkout routes. For each page, ask whether Bing associates it with the decision the page is meant to support. A high-volume article should not automatically outrank a low-volume service page in the budget. The service page may sit far closer to a sale.
Google Search Console can raise useful questions about the shared website. It cannot testify to what Bing crawled, selected or displayed. If the engines disagree, diagnose Bing with Bing evidence before prescribing a Bing-specific fix.
Connect traffic to a sales disposition
Clicks cannot tell you whether an enquiry was good. Form submissions cannot tell you either. A practical channel-outcome record can remain small:
| Field | Useful state |
|---|---|
| Source | Bing organic, Bing local, paid traffic, another source or unknown |
| Entry | Landing page and available query context |
| Action | Call, form, booking, order or assisted visit |
| Fit | Suitable service, area, customer type, budget and urgency |
| Disposition | Qualified, rejected, quoted, won, lost or unresolved |
| Value | Revenue, margin, pipeline value or another agreed measure |
Use the same qualification standard applied to Google Ads, social media, referrals and other acquisition channels. Bing does not deserve a participation trophy because its volume is lower. It also should not lose credit for a handful of valuable conversations merely because the reporting template was built for scale.
Attribution will remain imperfect. A buyer can research on Bing, return directly, speak to sales on another device or buy after several contacts. Record what can be joined. Label what is inferred. Do not promote every assisted possibility into revenue. This is performance marketing without the theatre: a visible trail from exposure to buyer quality, with uncertainty preserved instead of airbrushed.
Do not invent a universal Bing customer
Claims that Bing users are always older, wealthier, more corporate or more ready to buy are too broad to guide a real budget. Device defaults, workplace systems and Microsoft products may influence how some people reach Bing. Those conditions do not establish the buyer mix arriving at this website.
Read the first-party pattern instead. Compare geography, device, landing page, service interest, conversion type and sales disposition across a useful period. Look for repetition rather than constructing a persona from three visits and a LinkedIn infographic. If Bing repeatedly introduces suitable buyers for one service or page family, protect and investigate that pattern. If no meaningful difference survives inspection, apply the same audience, branding and page-quality standards used across the rest of the site. The buyer is evidence. The stereotype is decoration.
Separate shared website work from Bing-specific work
Most useful Bing SEO improves an asset the business already needs: crawlable pages, coherent architecture, clear service explanations, maintained sitemaps, credible claims and a route that lets a buyer act. That shared work can improve AI readiness, AI search optimisation, conventional search visibility and conversion rate optimisation at the same time. A clearer product page is still clearer when the visitor arrives from email. A better proof block still helps when the lead began with Google Ads. Sound website design should not require a different truth for every channel.
Bing-specific work needs Bing-specific evidence. It may include retaining controlled Bing Webmaster Tools access, resolving a condition Bing reports for an important URL, analysing Bing page and query data, maintaining Bing Places information, or using IndexNow where meaningful URL changes happen frequently.
Do not duplicate the entire Google backlog and call the second copy an AI SEO strategy. Fund the common website repairs first. Then isolate the smaller set of tasks supported by Bing-only observations or opportunity. My bias is towards a few commercially important pages with a visible reason for work. A hundred imported recommendations do not become strategy because every row contains the word Bing.
Got a Bing Webmaster Tools property nobody has looked at since it was verified? We can tell you in one session whether the evidence supports investment, maintenance or a bounded diagnostic.
AI citations belong in a separate evidence column
Microsoft announced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview in February 2026. Microsoft says the report can show citation counts, cited pages, sampled grounding queries and citation trends across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Microsoft also warns that these measures do not indicate authority, ranking, placement or a page’s role within an individual answer (Microsoft’s AI Performance announcement).
Use the report for what it can show. Citation activity can reveal pages and topics worth inspecting. It may indicate that a public explanation is being used as source material. It does not prove that the answer recommended the business, persuaded a buyer or caused an enquiry. Keep AI visibility, site visits and commercial outcomes as separate records until evidence legitimately joins them. AI marketing becomes particularly vulnerable to dashboard storytelling when a new metric arrives before anybody has agreed what decision it should change. An upward line is not a business model.
End the review with one of four decisions
A useful review terminates in a budget state rather than another list of observations.
Demand and a repairable gap
Invest
Suitable demand exists and a bounded, repairable gap has credible value. Fund the priority pages and tests connected to that opportunity. Invest does not mean touch everything; the evidence has earned a focused backlog.
Useful demand, need covered
Maintain
Bing contributes useful demand while shared site quality and basic control cover the need. Protect access, listings, tracking and important pages without manufacturing expansion.
Evidence incomplete
Investigate
Access, attribution or demand evidence is incomplete or contradictory. Repair measurement and run a bounded diagnostic before allocating growth budget.
Little suitable demand
Deprioritise
Reliable evidence shows little suitable demand, or the opportunity loses to better work. Preserve basic hygiene and define a trigger for reconsideration. Deprioritise does not mean abandon.
The business can retain verification, accurate listings, a technically sound WordPress or ecommerce site and proportionate monitoring without funding a Bing growth programme.
Make the rejected alternative visible
Every channel task consumes attention that could improve an offer, repair a checkout, strengthen proof, produce video, sharpen branding or fix a known technical fault. Put the proposed Bing work beside its best alternative:
- Name the exact page or query opportunity.
- State the observable condition expected to change.
- Define the commercial outcome or learning that would make the test useful.
- Estimate implementation and maintenance effort.
- Name the work the team will postpone.
- Set the review or stop condition.
This prevents low-cost work from becoming automatically high-priority. A task can be easy, technically valid and still be the wrong use of Tuesday. Bing Recommendations may surface automatically generated findings as Bing recrawls a verified site (Bing Recommendations). Treat those findings as diagnostic inputs. The business still decides whether the page matters, whether the proposed change addresses the real constraint and whether another action offers more value.
Let qualified demand make the decision
Bing SEO should compete for investment on the same terms as every other growth channel. Establish reliable access and measurement. Inspect Bing’s page and query evidence. Connect visits to suitable demand. Identify a repairable gap. Compare the work with the best alternative. Then invest, maintain, investigate or deprioritise.
I would reject both easy slogans: “Bing is too small to matter” and “Bing is an untapped goldmine.” Neither has looked at the company’s customers. Do not fund Bing because it exists. Do not ignore it because Google is larger. Let qualified enquiries, repairable opportunity and opportunity cost decide what happens next.

FAQs
It is worth funding when Bing introduces suitable buyers to commercially important pages and there is a specific, repairable visibility problem. Market share cannot answer that; your own Bing Webmaster Tools evidence and sales dispositions can.
An empty report may mean the property was added recently, the wrong site is selected, the period is unrepresentative or conversions are not captured. Bing does not backfill data from before collection began, so a new dashboard is a starting point, not a verdict.
Fund the shared website repairs first, because they help every channel. Then isolate the smaller set of Bing-specific tasks supported by Bing-only evidence, such as a reported condition on an important URL, Bing Places or IndexNow.
No. Microsoft says AI Performance measures do not indicate authority, ranking, placement or a page’s role within an answer. Keep AI visibility, site visits and commercial outcomes as separate records until evidence joins them.
