A featured snippet and a Google AI Overview can both answer a question before the ordinary results receive much attention. That visual resemblance encourages a lazy conclusion: AI Overviews are simply featured snippets with more text and newer branding. They are not.
A featured snippet presents information extracted from one webpage. An AI Overview is generated and accompanied by links to supporting web resources; Google says the process may use query fan-out across related searches, subtopics and data sources. One surface exposes a passage from a page. The other can place a page inside a wider retrieval and synthesis process.
TL;DR
- Same foundation, different source events: a snippet is extracted from your page; an AI Overview shows your page as a supporting link.
- A snippet puts one passage on trial. An AI Overview puts the page's contribution on trial.
- One strong page can satisfy both: an extraction-safe answer unit inside a page with distinct evidence and decision value.
- Report only what the evidence carries, and let NO CHANGE be a legitimate result.
That difference changes what an editor should inspect, what a report can honestly claim and what kind of repair makes sense. It does not justify cloning one thin page for “featured snippet SEO” and another for “AI Search Optimisation”.
My rule is to build one useful page, then audit its relationship with each surface under a different source contract.
The shared foundation does not make the source events identical
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says there is no additional technical requirement or special AI markup for inclusion (Google Search Central). That is the shared foundation. The observable events still differ.
| Decision | Featured snippet | AI Overview |
|---|---|---|
| Visible content | Descriptive information appears before its source link | Generated overview appears with supporting links |
| Source relationship | Displayed passage is extracted from a specific page | Linked page may support part of a synthesised answer |
| Smallest useful audit unit | Query, page and exact extracted passage | Query, full response, visible link and complete linked page |
| Main editorial risk | The lifted passage loses subject, scope, evidence or exception | The page adds no distinctive contribution, or analysis overclaims what it supplied |
| First repair | Fix the smallest incomplete answer unit | Improve page-level evidence or decision value only when a defect is established |
| Safe reporting verb | “Extracted from this page” | “Shown as a supporting link” |
Those reporting verbs sound modest because the evidence is modest. A screenshot does not prove endorsement, stable ownership, causation, a visit and commercial impact at once. I would reject “Google recommended us” for either observation. Precision is not timidity. It keeps AI SEO reporting connected to what actually happened.
A featured snippet puts one passage on trial
Google describes a featured snippet as a result where the usual format is reversed and the descriptive snippet appears before the source link. Publishers cannot nominate a page; Google’s systems decide whether a page would make a useful featured result (Google Search Central). The obvious audit unit is therefore the extracted passage.
Lift the displayed text into a blank document. Can an unfamiliar reader identify the subject? Does the first sentence answer the question? Does its evidence support the certainty? Does a nearby date, jurisdiction, price condition, eligibility rule or exception materially change the meaning? If the extract becomes wrong without the introduction or the paragraph below it, the page supplied an answer that required invisible scaffolding. The repair should be surgical:
Then isolate the passage again. Do not rebuild the entire article because one sentence lost its caveat. That is how a small editorial defect becomes a large Website Design invoice.
An AI Overview puts the page’s contribution on trial
An AI Overview creates a different diagnostic problem because the visible answer is generated. Google says its generative Search features retrieve web resources, may issue several related searches and present links that support the response. A visible link proves visibility under those recorded conditions. It does not prove which sentence influenced which part of the overview.
Inspect the whole page. What decision does it own? What does it contribute that a competent synthesis of the other sources would lose? Does it contain original evidence, first-hand method, a useful distinction, a disclosed comparison, an implementation detail or an honest limitation? If the page disappeared from the source set, would anything go missing except another summary of the same public facts?
This is where commodity content becomes commercially awkward. A page can be crawlable, indexed, readable and perfectly optimised around a phrase while contributing nothing distinctive. Adding an “AI Overview answer” paragraph does not solve that absence. The page needs a reason to be used. Google’s current generative-AI guidance explicitly encourages unique, non-commodity content and warns against creating pages for every possible query variation (Google Search Central). That brief is harder than placing another question in an H2. It is also useful for Branding and Business Growth beyond Search.
One strong page can satisfy both contracts
You do not need duplicate assets. You need a page with an extraction-safe answer and enough depth to contribute to a broader decision.
For the featured-snippet test, the answer unit should carry
For the AI-Overview test, the page around it should add
The first test protects meaning during extraction. The second protects value during synthesis. This is also the right Conversion Rate Optimisation trade-off. Do not withhold the direct answer to manufacture a click. Give orientation immediately, then earn attention with proof, application and judgement that the result surface cannot carry comfortably.
Different failures demand different repairs
Start with the observed failure rather than the fashionable feature name.
| Observation | What it proves | First repair to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet drops a decisive exception | Extracted unit is incomplete under observed conditions | Put the exception inside the answer unit |
| Featured snippet displays stale information | Source passage or evidence has aged | Correct the owner page and retain review date |
| Page appears beside a questionable AI Overview statement | Page was visible as support; sentence-level causation remains unknown | Capture the result and inspect the page for ambiguity or contradiction |
| Eligible page contributes nothing distinct | Potential ownership or originality weakness | Add genuine evidence or decision value, or merge it |
| Neither surface appears in a sample | Absence under sampled conditions | Check eligibility and ownership before changing copy |
| Dashboard moves without a captured result | Performance changed; surface and cause remain uncertain | Freeze dates, dimensions, releases and observations |
The discipline includes refusal. Sometimes the correct action is NO CHANGE. If the source remains accurate, the page owns a useful decision and the only evidence is one changed result, rewriting is theatre. Growth Marketing teams like action because action can be put on a roadmap. A defensible stop is often more valuable than an unnecessary rewrite that destroys the page’s existing conversion role.
Want to know which of your pages survive extraction and which have nothing left once the summary is written? We can audit both contracts on your priority pages.
Search Console now gives AI impressions their own report
The measurement landscape changed in 2026. Google’s Generative AI performance report rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026. It reports impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode and can group them by page, country, date and device. Google states that the data is already included in the Web search type of the ordinary Performance report (Search Console Help).
That creates useful visibility and several obvious traps. Do not add the generative report total to Web impressions; the activity is already included and would be counted twice. Do not infer the originating query when the documented dimensions do not provide one. Do not turn a supporting-link impression into a visit, recommendation or qualified enquiry.
Maintain two evidence records. For a featured snippet, preserve the query, source URL, extracted passage, date, country, language, device and screenshot. That record can support the statement that the page supplied the displayed passage. For an AI Overview, preserve the query, complete generated answer, visible supporting links, date, country, language, device and screenshot. That supports the statement that the page appeared as a supporting link.
Use platform data beside these observations, not instead of them. An impression is a measurement event. A captured surface is an observation. A visit is behaviour. A qualified enquiry is a Customer Acquisition outcome. They can belong in one analysis without becoming the same object.
Preview and participation controls have broader consequences
Copy is not always the correct repair. Sometimes the decision concerns whether Google may show or use material. Google documents data-nosnippet, nosnippet and max-snippet controls. data-nosnippet can exclude marked text from snippets. nosnippet prevents a text snippet and prevents page content being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. max-snippet limits preview length and direct input. Googlebot must be able to crawl the page to discover the controls (Google Search Central).
These are publishing-policy controls, not emergency formatting tools. Blocking a paragraph from extraction may affect ordinary search presentation. Blocking all snippets has wider consequences. noindex removes the page from Search rather than solving a narrow reuse concern.
Google also rolled out a Search Console property control for participation in Search generative AI features. Exclusion prevents the property’s links and content appearing in the supported generative experiences or grounding their responses; Google says this control is separate from model-training controls (Search Console Help). Decide the policy first. Then choose the smallest control that implements it. I would not mutilate a useful article when the real business question is whether its content may be reused.
AI readiness is an evidence-and-policy capability
The comparison reveals what practical AI readiness looks like. It is not a machine-facing writing dialect. It is the ability to:
That capability supports AI Search Optimisation, content operations and Digital Growth at once. It prevents the AI report from becoming a separate mythology with its own untestable language.
Compare the source event before approving work
Take one real query and one intended page. Capture the surface before discussing optimisation. If it is a featured snippet, move the displayed passage into a blank document. Test whether subject, answer, evidence and decisive condition travel together. Repair only the first material failure. If it is an AI Overview, preserve the entire response and the links actually shown. State what the page can defensibly contribute. If that contribution cannot be named without guessing, inspect ownership and original value before changing prose.
If there is only a performance chart, label it performance evidence. If there is only a screenshot, label it a dated observation. If neither reveals a page defect, hold the rewrite. The limitation is unavoidable: publishers cannot reconstruct the complete assembly of a generated answer from a visible link. Accept that uncertainty. Do not fill it with attribution theatre.
A featured snippet tests what one passage says when lifted. An AI Overview tests whether a page offers useful support inside a generated response whose full assembly remains unseen. Build for the reader. Make the answer safe to extract. Give the rest of the page something worth using. Then report only what the evidence can carry.
Good to know
FAQs
No. A featured snippet extracts a passage from one page. An AI Overview is generated and shows supporting links, and may use query fan-out across related searches. The surfaces share an eligibility foundation but have different source events, audit units and repairs.
No. Build one useful page with an extraction-safe answer unit and enough distinct evidence and decision value around it, then audit that page under each surface’s contract. Cloning thin pages per feature is the wrong response.
No. Google states the generative AI data is already included in the Web search type, so adding the totals double-counts. Use the report to group AI impressions by page, country, date and device, not to inflate the headline.
The controls overlap. nosnippet blocks both the text snippet and direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode; max-snippet limits both; the property-level opt-out removes the site from generative features. Decide the policy first, then choose the smallest control.
