Stop Asking Whether AI Understands Your Brand Audit the Description It Gives

You cannot prove that AI search “understands” a brand by asking one broad question and admiring, or panicking over, the answer. You can record how a named product described the business on a particular date, break that description into checkable claims and compare each claim with facts the business is prepared to stand behind. That is a smaller test. It is also a useful one.

It can expose an obsolete service, wrong company category, invented audience, exaggerated territory or missing limitation. It can reveal that the company’s own Website Design makes a straightforward offer unnecessarily difficult to explain. It can also show that the maintained public record is accurate and the sampled answer is unsupported or unstable. In that case, the responsible action may be to leave the website alone.

TL;DR

  • A generated paragraph is an output under recorded conditions, not a belief you can inspect. Audit the description, not the model's mind.
  • Settle the reference facts first, preserve the whole observation, and ask neutral questions that do not smuggle in your positioning.
  • Break fluent prose into atomic claims and give each a verdict that produces a different action. Never average them into one score.
  • Correct the nearest maintained source of a failed fact. Leave accurate pages alone.

My objection to “Does AI understand our brand?” is not semantic fussiness. The question encourages people to diagnose a model’s mind when the business decision actually concerns public statements. Audit the description. Trace the evidence. Correct only what deserves correction.

Fluent prose makes a weak diagnosis feel stronger

The mind-reading temptation is understandable. Somebody asks, “What does Example Ltd do?”, receives a confident paragraph and concludes that the system knows, or does not know, the business. But a generated paragraph is an output under particular conditions, not a durable belief you can inspect. Google explains that its AI search features may use different models and techniques and that responses and links can vary (Google Search Central). OpenAI says ChatGPT search may rewrite questions into targeted queries, use search partners and account for general location; it also warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect (OpenAI Help Center).

Those product facts do not explain the full origin of one answer. They explain why “ChatGPT thinks we are a software company” is a poor audit finding. The defensible statement is narrower: on a recorded date, under recorded conditions, a named product described the business as a software company. That statement can be inspected, repeated and compared with evidence. It does not pretend to reveal an internal state.

Decide what the test is allowed to settle

The description test has one job: determine whether material statements in a recorded answer agree with verified public facts. It does not measure total AI visibility, recommendation share, buyer exposure, sentiment, citation influence or Customer Acquisition. A correct response to a direct brand question does not prove that prospective buyers encounter the business during category research. A frequent mention does not prove that the description is accurate. Settle the reference facts first:

FactWhat the business must establish
IdentityThe exact legal or trading organisation being described
CategoryThe ordinary category that identifies what the business is
OfferCurrent products or services
Audience and fitWho the offer serves and any material eligibility condition
Operating scopeGeography, delivery model, availability or service boundary
Material limitationWhat the business does not provide or cannot promise
EvidenceWhich maintained public sources support consequential claims

If leadership, sales and delivery cannot agree on those facts, AI Marketing is not the first problem. The brand has no stable description to test. Resolve the operating truth before scoring an external paraphrase of it. That is an AI readiness issue in the useful sense: can the organisation state, evidence, maintain and release its own facts?

Preserve the answer before improving the question

Capture the complete observation, not a cropped sentence copied into a strategy deck. Record the product, mode and named feature; the exact question as originally entered; date, time and locale; signed-in state and known personalisation; relevant earlier conversation or attached material; the complete visible answer; inline citations, source panel and related links; a screenshot and copyable text; and the person who ran the check.

Do this before somebody “cleans up” the prompt. Prompt improvement can make an answer more useful, but it changes the observation. If one test asks “Who are Boostbery?” and the next supplies the category, location and preferred positioning, the difference cannot be attributed to a changing public record.

I would rather have five boring comparable observations than fifty clever prompts. The purpose is not to demonstrate prompt craft. It is to create evidence another person can audit.

Ask questions that do not smuggle in the positioning

A leading prompt tests whether a system will accept the premise you supplied. Why is Example Ltd the leading Sussex consultancy for AI search optimisation? is weak. What is Example Ltd, what does it provide, who is it for and which public sources support that description? is useful. For a controlled check, separate the tasks:

  1. What is the brand?
  2. Which ordinary business category best describes the brand?
  3. Which current products or services does it provide?
  4. Who is each offer suitable for?
  5. Which geography, delivery or availability limits apply?
  6. Which public sources support each material statement?

Keep the core question set stable across comparable samples. Add exploratory prompts in a separate record. Otherwise the testing method creates the variation and the report blames the brand. This matters when AI SEO becomes part of a broader Growth Marketing programme. A changing prompt set can manufacture an apparent trend, which can then trigger content production, Branding changes or a website rewrite. The measurement must be stable enough to deserve the downstream cost.

Break the paragraph into claims small enough to verify

Generated prose bundles propositions together. Its fluency creates borrowed credibility between them. Suppose an answer says: Example Ltd is a nationwide cybersecurity consultancy for healthcare providers, offering on-site compliance audits that guarantee certification. That sentence contains at least six claims:

  • the entity is Example Ltd;
  • the category is cybersecurity consultancy;
  • the territory is nationwide;
  • the audience is healthcare providers;
  • the service includes on-site compliance audits;
  • the outcome includes guaranteed certification.

Each requires its own evidence and verdict. A correct identity does not rescue an invented guarantee. A service page confirming remote consultancy does not prove nationwide on-site delivery. A review praising helpful advice does not establish certification authority. This is the point at which most “brand understanding” scores become actively unhelpful. Five correct minor details cannot average away one commercially dangerous false claim. Accuracy is not a school exam. The consequence of the individual proposition matters.

Use verdicts that produce different actions

Score every material claim with a decision-bearing verdict:

VerdictMeaningResponse
AccurateMatches verified facts and retains material conditionsKeep the record; no correction
IncompleteTrue, but an omission changes fit or meaningClarify the maintained source where the condition belongs
AmbiguousSupports more than one consequential interpretationReplace vague wording with the specific fact
WrongConflicts with verified evidenceCorrect an owned source, pursue a factual third-party correction or record unsupported output
UnknownAvailable evidence cannot confirm or refute itInvestigate before editing

Do not collapse these verdicts into one percentage. A 92% score might conceal the only claim a buyer actually uses to decide suitability. My decision rule is simple: weight claims by the decision they can distort. Identity, offer, eligibility, territory, price basis, risk and guarantees deserve more attention than harmless descriptive variation.

Trace each failed claim to the nearest source

When a claim fails, find the public record closest to that fact before opening WordPress.

The business publishes the same error

The About page uses an obsolete category. A service page overstates coverage. A product feed lists retired stock. Correct the maintained source. The sampled answer has exposed a genuine public-record problem, even if it did not prove causation.

A third party carries the disputed statement

A directory, partner biography, event listing or old article contains the error. Confirm that it refers to the same entity. Separate factual mistakes from independent opinion. Use the publisher’s legitimate correction process rather than manufacturing pages to outnumber the source.

No inspected source supports the statement

The output may be unsupported, the operative source may be unseen or the answer may vary. Preserve it and repeat a bounded sample only if the issue matters. Do not damage an accurate website to accommodate a sentence whose origin and recurrence remain unknown.

I call this the nearest-source rule. Correct the closest maintained owner of the fact. Do not commission five new articles while the canonical service page remains vague or wrong.

Make the smallest correction the evidence permits

If an owned source contains the defect, repair the proposition rather than rewriting the entire site by reflex.

  • Name the category in language an unfamiliar buyer recognises.
  • State the current service directly.
  • Identify the audience and conditions that determine fit.
  • Replace "nationwide" with the actual territory or delivery model.
  • Keep a material exclusion beside the claim it limits.
  • Attach capability claims to evidence that supports that capability.
  • Remove guarantees the business cannot issue.

Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content provides original value, clear sourcing and enough information to help the intended audience achieve its goal (Google Search Central). That is a useful publishing standard. It is not a promise that revised wording will appear in a future generated answer.

I leave accurate pages alone when the sample does not reveal a defensible defect. Editing because an output feels embarrassing is reputation anxiety with CMS access. It can weaken Conversion Rate Optimisation by replacing clear buyer language with defensive copy written for a machine.

Want a recorded, repeatable description sample instead of a screenshot in a strategy deck? We run the controlled check and trace every failed claim to its nearest source.

Give the same page to an unfamiliar person

Run a human description check alongside the product sample. Give an unbriefed reviewer the public page most likely to define the business. Ask them to explain its identity, category, offer, audience, scope and limitation. Do not give them the internal positioning deck. Do not correct their wording mid-test. If both the person and the generated answer produce the same ambiguity, inspect the public wording closely. If the person understands the maintained page and the generated answer remains wrong, the case for rewriting is weaker.

This does not prove humans and models fail for the same reason. It exposes the context internal teams unconsciously supply. Employees know that “digital transformation” means a specific implementation service, “UK coverage” means remote delivery and “support” excludes emergency response. A new buyer inherits none of that. For Website Design, this is a powerful constraint. The page must explain the brand without relying on navigation history, a sales call or insider vocabulary. That helps ordinary comprehension first and AI Search Optimisation second.

Keep accuracy, visibility and commercial performance apart

A brand can be described accurately when asked directly and still be absent from relevant category questions. It can appear often and be described badly. It can receive citations that produce no visits, or visits that produce no suitable enquiries. Maintain separate records for description accuracy (whether sampled claims match verified facts), question inclusion (whether the brand appears for a defined relevant task set), source quality (whether maintained pages, profiles and feeds remain current and evidenced), buyer evidence (what real prospects report seeing or understanding) and commercial performance (qualified visits, enquiries, opportunities and revenue within stated attribution limits).

This separation prevents an AI visibility number from swallowing the whole Digital Growth strategy. It also lets Performance Marketing, Social Media, Google Ads and Ecommerce teams distinguish a shared public-fact problem from a channel-specific acquisition problem. No single metric owns the story. A direct brand prompt is an accuracy sample, not market share. A citation is a source event, not a sale. A sale is not proof that the public description was correct.

End every claim with an action, or a stop

Every checked proposition should reach one of five states:

  • Correct amend a false fact on a source the business controls.
  • Clarify make a true but incomplete proposition usable.
  • Investigate obtain missing evidence or pursue a third-party correction before editing.
  • Monitor repeat a bounded test where consequential variability remains open.
  • No action retain an accurate public record when no justified repair exists.

Assign ownership to the fact and correction, not to the external system’s output. The business can maintain its category, service scope, audience and evidence. It cannot guarantee everything a generative product may say. There is an honest limit to this method. Description testing does not tell you the full influence of AI search on Business Growth, and a clean sample does not prove every future answer will be accurate. It is a controlled diagnostic for one question: does this recorded description match the material public truth? That is enough to make a better decision.

Record the conditions. Ask neutral questions. Break fluent prose into atomic claims. Weight them by consequence. Trace defects to their nearest sources. Make the smallest correction the evidence permits, and give accurate pages permission to remain unchanged. You still will not know whether AI truly “understands” the brand. You will have something far more useful: an auditable description, a cleaner public record where correction is justified and a stop rule when it is not.

FAQs

Can I test whether ChatGPT or Google AI understands my brand?

Not as a belief. You can record how a named product described the business on a given date under recorded conditions, then check each claim in that description against verified public facts.

Why not score AI brand accuracy as a percentage?

Because five correct minor details can average away one commercially dangerous false claim. Give each claim its own verdict and weight it by the decision it can distort.

What should I do when the AI description is wrong?

Find the public source closest to the failed fact. If your own page publishes the error, correct it. If a third party carries it, use their correction process. If no source supports it, preserve the observation and do not damage an accurate site.

Should I rewrite my website because an AI answer looks embarrassing?

No. Make the smallest correction the evidence permits, and leave accurate pages alone. Editing for a machine can weaken clear buyer language.
